ALBANY -- When Mercedes Rios was diagnosed with the HIV virus in 1987, she was in denial. The single mom didn't even tell her four children about her life-threatening disease.
``It scared me. By not talking about it, I thought I could somehow put it off. Maybe I wouldn't die as fast,'' she said. ``But when I started to see other people dying and leaving their children, I knew I had to do something to secure their future.''
With help from a state-funded program, Rios was able to get the legal backing necessary to ensure her children would be taken care of.
