WASHINGTON--The Food and Drug Administration is withdrawing its plan to curb the use of ephedra, a dietary supplement that has been linked to serious health problems in some individuals.
Ephedra, also recognized by the term ephedrine alkaloids, is used in some weight loss products or to increase the energy level of athletes and body builders.
The original rule proposed by the FDA would have set dosages and required warnings against using the product for extended periods.
But the agency scaled back its plan after the General Accounting Office questioned many of the reports the FDA had compiled on its alleged harmful effects.
