In an emotional speech, Senator STOTT DESPOJA said she's offered her resignation topreserve the Democrats' voter appeal.
Senator STOTT DESPOJA's decision to resign as leader follows a party crisis meeting this morning.
She says most of her colleagues were unable to support a motion that formally expressedsupport for the party's constitution and its national executive.
Senator STOTT DESPOJA says they were not prepared to support a motion that supportedthe right of staff not to be vilified publicly by senators in the media, or to opposepublic denigration of the party's membership.
She says she could have retained her leadership by supporting such motions -- and byignoring the membership.
But she says she was not prepared to sell out the membership.
Senator STOTT DESPOJA says the party has been stupidly flaunting its disunity and shequestions the motives of some of her colleagues seeking reform.
