VIC: Unusually well behaved crowds welcome 1999 in Victoria
Police say Victorians have turned out in their tens of thousands to welcome 1999 and have
been unusually well-behaved.
A record crowd estimated at 100,000 gathered at Melbourne's riverside Southgate to watch
fireworks cascading from the top of the Arts Centre spire and to enjoy musical entertainment.
Traffic in the area was brought to a virtual standstill, as revellers safeguarded their
viewing position along the Yarra River.
